Canvas is rolling out across the University by Semester 1 of 2016, which means we need to get a wriggle on! The central Canvas team and the Business School are providing a variety of support and training over this semester, to ensure that every course running next semester is successfully set up in our upgraded learning management system.
Support Staff and Champions
There are several groups in the Business School who are working on the upgrade to Canvas.
UABS Canvas facilitators Sally Eberhard, Dr Nabeel Albashiry and Qian Liu will run training and drop-in sessions to assist Semester 1 teaching and teaching support staff.
UABS E-learning facilitators (ELFs) are trained student helpers who will be available to support staff who have any questions after training.
Staff from the Innovative Learning Team – Petteena McOnie, Don Sheridan, Emma Sadera, Narissa Lewis, Lyn Collie and Chun Li – are looking at what Canvas can do and how the Business School can make the best use of it.
Departmental Champions are early adopters who will be introduced to Canvas before most staff and should be able to address questions about Canvas from within in their departments.

When and how
For staff with courses running in Semester 1 of 2016, an invitation to train and information about Canvas will be provided from late September, depending on when your course becomes available in Canvas. At that point, you’ll have a two-hour training session which will involve working directly on the course or courses you’ll be teaching in Semester 1. After that, you’ll be able to meet with an e-learning facilitator to work out any remaining questions or issues you may have. Champions and other early adopters will be offered training first.
Additional support will also be offered. Business School staff will be able to attend topic-specific sessions, information sessions, and drop-in sessions. Times and dates for support sessions will be advised once training begins. In addition, this year’s Learn Do Share is devoted entirely to Canvas and offers a chance to think about and be inspired by what the platform can offer from a pedagogical perspective.
Something else to think about is Talis Aspire. Talis is being wrapped into the Canvas launch. If you’re not aware of this platform, it streamlines the creation and management of reading lists and allows copyright compliance to be better managed across the University. It also supplies analytics about student reading activity.
